Deborah H. How, Ph.D.

Deborah H. How is a founding partner of BackFlip Consulting, LLC; she had a 100% acceptance rate applying to college and graduate school and was fully funded for all three of her academic degrees.  Deborah received the Ph.D. degree in historical musicology from the USC Thornton School of Music, where she was the recipient of USC's highest graduate-level award at the time, the All-University Predoctoral Merit Fellowship.  She is the 2010 Winner of the Mu Phi Epsilon Musicological Research Contest (Category 1: Ph.D. Dissertations) and has held positions as both a Teaching Fellow and Lecturer in the Department of Music History & Literature at USC.  Deborah received the M.A. degree in ethnomusicology from the UCLA School of Music and studied with the Grand Kabuki of Tokyo while in residence at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Theatre & Dance.  She graduated from the External Examination (Honors) Program at Swarthmore College with the B.A. degree in music and theater studies (scenic design).  Deborah is a member of the Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies and a member of the Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Fraternity.

Deborah, a concertizing classical pianist and flutist, enjoys playing chamber music and performs locally with various colleagues.  She has recently appeared as a concerto soloist with the Formosa Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra, and Two Cranes Music Festival International Chamber Orchestra.  Deborah maintains an active private music studio in Santa Monica (www.musette.org).  Her students are perennial winners at numerous local, state, national, and international events.  She is in high demand as a lecturer throughout California on pedagogical and performance practice topics, and she is a Regional Leader and Center Representative for the Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory Achievement Program (www.theachievementprogram.org).  Deborah is also a member of the Royal Conservatory of Music Examinations College of Examiners (http://examinations.rcmusic.ca/college-examiners).

Committed to community service, Deborah is the co-founder and president of the Westside Music Foundation (www.westsidemusicfoundation.org), a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to excellence in music education and making the highest quality music opportunities available to all students, regardless of financial ability to pay.  She also enjoys her work as an alumni interviewer for prospective students applying for admission to Swarthmore College and running information booths for Swarthmore at local College Fairs.  Deborah is currently serving a three-year term on the Swarthmore College Alumni Council (fall 2010 - spring 2013) and is the Swarthmore College Los Angeles Alumni Connection Chair.

Deborah has over 15 years experience as a private college admissions consultant.  She specializes in Arts Supplemental Materials submissions and resume/curriculum vitae editing.
